GRAFTON, Mass. - A night after the Grafton boys basketball team
suffocated Millbury in a 29-point victory, the Lady Woolies exacted a bit
of revenge with a convincing 62-35 win over the Indians at Grafton High
School Friday night.
"I thought we defended well early and got off to a real good start," said
Millbury coach Steve Reno. "A lot of people contributed and almost
everyone scored. I thought we played well."
The Woolies' press defense was overwhelming in the first quarter, as
Millbury jumped out to 20-0 lead after the first frame.
Grafton recovered and played even with the Woolies in the second and
third quarters, but the early deficit proved too much as Millbury pulled
away again in the fourth.
Mickayla Mitchell led the Woolies with 17 points, and Brianna Allard
added 14. Shannon Dewar led the Indians with 15 points, including three
3-pointers, and Meg Driscoll scored 12.
For Grafton coach John Mulryan, breaking the game down quarter by quarter
has helped keep the team focused and putting bad stretched behind them.
"Having the short term goals seems to be working to get the bad quarter
out of their mind and start fresh and continue to play hard," Mulryan
said.
Dewar had a standout game for the Indians, scoring all of her points on
free throws and long balls.
"Shannon is a young player who's really developed. If we need a bucket,
Shannon finds a way to draw a foul and get to the line." Mulryan said.
"When she scores we're a different team, and it opens things up for other
players."
Grafton returns to the court Tuesday, Feb. 7 at home against Northbridge
at 7 p.m. Millbury hosts Notre Dame Academy Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
